Di sana manlang may ambulansya at firetrack or any concerns sa ganitong sitwasyon. Tama ba?

ONLINE NEWS HEADLINES

(photo from Manilatimes Website)

A tank stands guard in front of the Royal Plaza in Bangkok the morning after the military takeover Tuesday. That bloggers can be called journalist “if do something what journalist does” he said.

“Journalist in name, nothing special in journalist, we just romanticized the name journalist, its just a name”, Fernandez said.

Internet has its booming effect in communication today. Just like television, internet is now on its height affecting mass communication.

Media organizations today, whether print or broadcast have their entire online version in the internet. Philippine Daily Inquirer as the number one national news paper now can be access in internet in their INQ7.Net website.

Behind this existence of blogging, many bloggers also exist. But Fernandez said he don’t see it as a “threat” to the traditional media. “What you see in print and into online they complement” he added.

“Honest and Fair…never plagiarize” he said. ‘Guard against garbage information to check” added Fernandez. This is what it needs in blogging.

In his optimistic ideas, Fernandez view the new generation of journalist that they will be the one to pursue blogging as a new media. That in blogging, journalism students today can be an instant publisher, by not marrying a rich to put up a news paper publication.
But Fernandez doesn’t kill the possibilities, which in the future blogging get its height that can kill news paper industry. That’s why “I don’t want to see the future” he said.

Mr. Fernandez doesn’t forget to put emphasis on the ethics and principles of a journalism which is to be “accurate”. According to him there is a regulation that bound blogging and its implemented now in US. He cited the issue of PCIJ regarding libel because of a certain article posted in the internet.

Mr. Amerr Amor a former student of Mr. Fernandez, who is now an instructor of UP, who holds the class, also joined the discussion reminiscing his college days about traditional journalism

The forum ended successfully leaving new thoughts and optimistic views shared by Fernandez. The energetic and intelligent editor in his age made the student amazed in his shared thoughts regarding the existence of blogging as an online journalism. The classroom was filled with funny jokes carrying practical answers of what blogging is today and in the future of media. #

TEXTING : Is it a form of mass media?

From Inquirer (27 Aug.2006)
This was a text message I received yesterday, Sunday August 27,2006. Almost my co-UPian’s received same message and got different reactions on the article.
I got the message about 4pm yesterday , since I am going to market I didn’t think twice and buy an INQUIRER with me. This makes me verify the chain message.
In the article published on Philippine Daily Inquirer, Sunday. In the article of Armand N. Nocum entitled: Gonzalez: UP breeds destabilizes, naked runners .The lead of the story really proved the message I received saying :
THIS TIME JUSTICE SECRETARY Raul Gonzales has picked on the University of the Philippines school system, saying it mainly produces militant protesters and fraternity men and women who run around the campus naked.
When the reporter of PDI asked GONZALEZ where he graduated. He replied, “University of Sto. Tomas…that’s why I am well behaved.” With no intention to degrade UP as an institution and its students Gonzales sated in the interview . In the article, But he said he was “not degrading UP per se” but only questioning the kind of students that came from it.”
Whatever Mr. Gonzalez wants to point out, I respect him for that is his opinion and he doesn’t make a point to think about what he’s saying. Well he is a “ graduate of University Sto-Tomas” right?
In this matter, texting as a form of communication helps to access message easily. But can we call texting using cellular phones as a way and form of mass media? Cellular phones are communication channel, yes, but is it a mass medium or new form of new media like internet? Are news coming from cellular phones through text messaging reliable?
I never knew about the Gonzalez issue if I don’t received a text. That issue will the same time just buried in the PDI columns if that text didn’t make it sensationalize through chain messaging . Through that text message I cross-checked and verify it in PDI. Thus this means texting can be a room for news? Think.

SONA 2006 held at Batasang Pambansa

State of the Nation Address of Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, 24 July 2006, Plenary Hall, Batasang Pambansa
Thank you.
Thank you, Speaker de Venecia. Congratulations, Senate President Manny Villar; Vice-President Noli de Castro; President Ramos; Chief Justice Panganiban; Members of the diplomatic corps; Senators; Congressmen and Congresswomen; Other officials, ladies and gentlemen.
Sa ating mga kababayan, a journey of a thousand miles does not begin with a single step. It starts with the first step, with gathering the means to complete it successfully. Those means are now at hand.
To my friends in Congress who, in the face of grave political consequences, championed and passed some of the most severe and critical fiscal reforms to save our economy, maraming salamat. You are the true friends of the Filipino people. For the real challenge has never been to blame but to fix what is wrong in our country and our economy.
Now, we have the money to pay down our debt and to build up our country.
To the civil servants who rose to the challenge of turning a weakening economy to a strong republic, through more vigorous tax collection and more vigilant action against corruption, maraming salamat. We have achieved record revenue collections. We are lining up corrupt officials to face the consequences of their misdeeds. And finally earned the respect of the international community as a serious and viable state for our fiscal discipline and billions of pesos in annual interest savings that are now going into necessary public investments.
To our men and women in the armed services, the huge and deep core of your loyalty has earned the nation's accolade. The few mutineers have been condemned by the people. They and their partisan cohorts and funders are being brought to justice.
And at a time when we must each, as individuals and as communities, take greater responsibility, our local government officials man the frontline of change: change for greater accountability, for better service and more responsiveness to their constituents.
Higit sa lahat, salamat sa sambayanang Pilipino, para sa inyong mga sakripisyo, sa inyong tiyaga, for believing, in the face of the greatest hardships, in our ability to surmount the obstacles to the future you deserve; you who have resisted persistent if not pathetic calls for despair instead of faith, for anarchy instead of harmony, salamat, salamat, taus- pusong pasasalamat.
So I stand before you today to deliver a state of the nation that is focused on what the people want; the people want to know the plan to put us on the path to prosperity.
I am not here to talk about politics; I am here to talk about what the people want; details on the state of the nation and what their government is doing to make progress every single day.
Gaya ng nakikita sa graph na ito, dahil sa ating reporma sa ekonomiya, we now have the funds to address social inequity and economic disparity. Too many ... masyadong marami, ang mamamayang nagugutom.
We now have the funds to stamp out terrorism and lawless violence.
Our reforms have earned us P1 billion from the U.S. Millennium Challenge Account for more investigators, prosecutors, and new technology to fight corruption. We are matching this with another billion from our fiscal savings.
We now have the funds for constitutional and electoral changes. For surely, there must be a better way to do politics, so that those who lose elections do not make the country pay for their frustrated ambitions. There must be a better way so that those who win the nation's mandate to govern can work without delay and whimsical obstruction. There must be a better way.
Meanwhile, now we can fund the Medium Term Public Investment Program.
And finally, Phase Three: to invest in the natural advantages and natural resources of each section of our nation so that when harnessed together, the major economic regions of the nation are larger than the sum of its parts.
We will enhance the competitive advantage of the natural "super regions" of the Philippines: the North Luzon Agribusiness Quadrangle, the Metro Luzon Urban Beltway, Central Philippines, Mindanao and the Cyber Corridor.
In North Luzon, we will prioritize agribusiness investments. The agricultural and fisheries potential of the Cordilleras, Ilocandia, and Cagayan Valley can feed Luzon affordably. And nearness to North Asia holds the rich promise of agricultural exports and tourism.
My father built the Halsema Highway from Baguio to Bontoc, and the Bagabag airport in Nueva Vizcaya to access the Ifugao rice terraces, which by the way, the UNESCO has recently praised for the way we have carried out our heritage preservation policy. We have rehabilitated the Baguio to Mount Data leg of the highway and the rest of Halsema will now follow. We will upgrade the Bagabag airport and build a new one in Lallo, Cagayan, which will connect to Cordillera by upgrading the Tabuk-Tuguegarao Road.
Sabi niya, "This is not for me but for him."
And our post-harvest support shall continue, like the cold chain that we set up in 2004 for La Trinidad, Benguet under Mayor Nestor Fongwan. It consisted of a refrigerated storage facility and refrigerated trucks to deliver vegetables to Metro Manila.
So that the people will know how well their money is spent, Benguet and its towns of Bakun, Bokod and Itogon have rolled out the new electronic government accounting system in their jurisdictions.
If Ifugao was able to cut its poverty in half in the first three years of our administration, from 56 to 28%, congratulations. We hope that through these programs, the other provinces can replicate the success of Ifugao.
We will expand President Ramos' flagship San Roque Multipurpose Dam with the massive Agno River Project. Another major project is the Banaoang Irrigation. We allocate P200 million a month for small irrigation projects like those in the flood control plan of the Region II Development Council headed by Bishop Ramon Villena. Plus another P200 million a month for farm to market roads.
Also in the works is an international airport in Poro, La Union and the improvement of the two airports in Batanes as recommended by Governor Vic Gato. Ilocos Sur will have a seaport in Salomague while the Cagayan Zone Authority will better the one in Port Irene.
To save dollars, windmills in Batanes and Ilocos Norte turn megawinds into megawatts. When Army Commander Romy Tolentino was North Luzon commander, he became a soldier-farmer, planting jatropha as yet another alternative fuel.
The Metro Luzon Urban Beltway spans most of Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mindoro and Marinduque. It must be a globally competitive urban, industrial and services center, because it produces more than half of the country's GDP.
To be world-class we invest in five comprehensive strategies for global competitiveness:
Make food plentiful and affordable to keep our labor cost globally competitive.
Reduce the cost of electricity to make our factories regionally competitive. 3. Modernize infrastructure at least cost to efficiently transport goods and people.
Mobilize, upgrade and disseminate knowledge and technologies for productivity.
Reduce red tape in all agencies to cut business costs.
The most prohibitive red tape is in our outmoded Constitution. We need Constitutional change to bring our rules of investment into the new millennium
The new public bidding process has been shortened to 45 days for infrastructure, and 26 days for supplies, as of today. Even before this, Metro Manila firms paying bribes for public contracts declined from 57% in 2003 to 46 today. Congratulations, Metro Manila
Machine readable electronic passports will enhance the credibility of Philippine travel documents, improve the mobility and increase the prospects of Philippine business and labor.
Legitimate mobility is hampered by human trafficking. Through the support of the USAID, we have convicted human traffickers with the Tongco spouses who were sentenced in a Quezon City court last December. These accomplishments removed us from the from the priority anti-trafficking watchlist.
To lower power costs we introduced the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market last month. Let's give it a chance to work. And we would like big power consumers like electronics, our number one exports, to avail of lower power rates from the National Power Corporation. On coco-biodiesel, we now have enough capacity for the proposed 1% blend just waiting to be passed into law.
The Subic-Clark corridor is on its way to a competitive international logistics center. This will be my legacy to my cabalens, jointly with Lito and Mark Lapid, Rey Aquino, Ana Bondoc, Blue Boy Nepomuceno, my son Mikey and Tarzan Lazatin. We jumpstarted it with giant investments in the Subic Seaport, the Clark Airport, and the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway.
And to bring the beltway to the west we will connect the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Road to Dingalan Port through Nueva Ecija, and the Marikina- Infanta Road to the port of Real.
We will have a continuous highway from Clark to Metro Manila to Batangas Port. Tapo? We will also build the Coastal Road to Bacoor, which has become urban under Jesse Castillo.
We will construct the Northrail to Clark and the Southrail to Lucena and on to Bicol, and upgrade the link between them. We will also extend the LRT to Bacoor.
Teddy Boy Locsin said it hadn't been done before, and couldn't be done at all. Well, Teddy?
We thank China for agreeing to fund these housing needs.
We are setting up a 300 million liters per day pumping station for Muntinlupa, Las Pinas and Paranaque.
We will build a roll-on-roll-roll-off port system to link Lucena, Quezon to Boac, Marinduque, like the Batangas-Mindoro RORO.
And we will end the long oppression of barangays by rebel terrorists who kill without qualms, even their own.
In the harshest possible terms I condemn political killings. We together stopped judicial executions with the abolition of the death penalty. We urge witnesses to come forward. Together we will stop extrajudicial executions.
Central Philippines has the competitive edge in tourism in its natural wonders and the extraordinary hospitality of its people. The area sweeps across Palawan and Romblon, the Visayas and Bicol, plus the northern Mindanao islands of Camiguin, Siargao and Dapitan. Topbilled by Boracay, Cebu, Bohol and Palawan, it attracts more than half of the foreign tourists to the Philippines. It is also the center of geothermal power in the country, which we continue to develop.
The priority here is tourism investments. Coming soon for superstar Boracay are an instrument landing system for the Kalibo airport and a P3 billion private investment in a San Jose, Romblon airport, plus good roads to spillover destinations all over Panay.
In Cebu, Gwen Garcia is constructing a world-class convention center for the ASEAN and East Asian Summits in December.
Helping our infrastructure upgrading, is the fall in bribery for public sector contracts in Metro Cebu, from 62% of companies in 2004 to 47 today. Congratulations to Cardinal Vidal for shepherding his flock and to Metro Cebu Mayors Osmena, Ouano and Fernandez, and Metro Cebu representatives del Mar, Cuenco, Gullas and Soon-Ruiz.
Bohol became a destination distinct from Cebu since it defeated the terrorist insurgency with community initiatives led by the power tandem of Rico Aumentado and General Johnny Gomez, now the NCR Commander. It now merits its own international airport, just as our country deserves a world-class Constitution strongly supported by Governor Aumentado and the league of local authorities.
Tourism in Palawan requires the upgrading of the airports of Puerto Princesa, Busuanga, San Vicente (hometown of Congressman Alvarez that's why he's clapping) and the building of a new one in Balabac; as well as a continuous road backbone from El Nido to Bataraza.
We will lengthen the Dumaguete runway for tourism as well as electronics. Valencia, Oriental Negros could attract semiconductor firms with power rates subsidized by the geothermal field of Palimpinon. Negros will also advance energy independence with ethanol projects in San Carlos City and Tamlang Valley, once the biofuel law is passed. (You have done your part, Migs)
We will serve Guimaras by the airport being built in Santa Barbara, Iloilo and by a new RORO port in Sibunag. We will link Sipalay via Silay airport funded by the national government and Kabankalan airport being built by its local government. Thank you.
For Bicol's whalesharks, beaches and, of course, Mount Mayon, we have started acquiring the right of way for an international airport in Daraga, Albay. We will provide the means to the perfect surfs of the Pacific by upgrading the airports of Siargao, Guiuan and Tacloban.
We will widen the road to Dakak in Dapitan, and RORO will connect Siquijor to Santander, Cebu; Camiguin to Jagna, Bohol; Ubay, Bohol to Maasin, Southern Leyte, for diving in Limasawa.
We will bring Masbate and Biliran into the RORO Eastern Nautical Highway from Surigao through Leyte through Naval and Maripipi in Biliran through Esperanza, Aroroy and Burias Island in Masbate and on to Bicol. The much-awaited 10-megawatt generator set arrived in Masbate last Saturday. It is ready to power up the province before the end of the month.
Camiguin, Romblon and Camarines Norte got out of the list of poorest provinces in 2003. With tourism these provinces can become rich.
Also winning the war against poverty and calamity, undaunted by unimaginable catastrophe, the valiant people of Southern Leyte, under the leadership of Rosette Lerias and Oging Mercado (our Rudy Guliani) are rebuilding the lives of Saint Bernard and San Francisco from their tragic mudslides. Yesterday, I asked the Japanese government to help Southern Leyte implement an integrated management approach to deal with their critical ecosystem, like the one the World Bank has approved for the Bicol River Basin.
Mindanao is our priority for agribusiness investments in the south. Mindanao is mostly fertile and largely typhoon-free, exporting coconut products and high value crops, and from its waters come 40% of the country's fish catch. Our investment priorities mirror those for North Luzon, and more because Mindanao has the poorest regions and poorest provinces and because we have to spend on a logistics system linking it to the north.
In 2003 we introduced the RORO from Zamboanga del Norte through Negros, Panay and Mindoro to Batangas. This system has slashed travel time from Mindanao to Luzon from 36 hours to 24 hours, and freight cost by 30 percent, so crucial to food shipments. Now we will develop more routes like the one from Cagayan de Oro through Camiguin, Bohol, Cebu and Masbate to Bicol, the Central Nautical Highway.
Also in 2003, Sulu, Lanao del Sur, and Tawitawi registered double-digit declines in poverty incidence from the year 2000. Congratulations.
Kitang-kita ang pag-ibayo ng mga isla ng Sulu, Basilan at Tawi-Tawi. Nagbukas ang Jollibee sa Basilan. The Balikatan exercises with the United States, combined with the US GEM program and other donor-assisted projects, have no doubt contributed to this.
Halimbawa, iyong "from arms to farms¿¿ ni Governor Ben Loong ng Sulu, with his caravan of tractors literally invading former rebel camps in his province. Congratulations.
Thank you for giving peace a chance. Congratulations, Commander Samson.
I take this occasion to express our gratitude to the donor community from the US, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the European Union, Australia, Japan, our ASEAN neighbors, the multilaterals and the rest of the world. Thank you for helping us in our peace process.
If we can harness the forces of good in our nation, the positive force at work here at home and those from abroad such as the US, Malaysia, the OIC and others, we shall prevail in Mindanao with a peace agreement that brings freedom and hope to all Filipinos. With this peace, we would reap dividends in resources invested in agribusiness, not aggression, to build up, not tear down, the Philippine south.
Among the possible peace dividends would be pro-poor road projects like the Siocon-Sirawai-Sibuco-Baligyan Road in Zamboanga del Norte; the Lebak to Maguindanao which Sim Datumanong started when he was Secretary of Public Works; the Dinagat Island road network in Surigao Del Norte; the Hawilian-Salug-Sinakungan barangay road in Agusan del Sur; the Pangil Bay Bridge; and the Surigao-Davao Road, which we want to be as beautiful as the Bukidnon Highway completed during the administration of Joe Zubiri and the term of Migs Zubiri.
Mindanao's number one export, coconuts, has been growing continuously for the last three years, at the rate of 10% a year. The coconut farmers deserve a portion of the peace dividend. I invite Congress and the Bishops-Ulama-Priests-Pastors-Farmer-Lumad Conference led by Archbishop Fernando Capalla to help me ensure their rightful share.
On top of peace and investment, progress also demands good governance. I congratulate Donkoy Emano for the drop in reports of corruption for public contracts in Cagayan de Oro from 65% of firms last year to 38 this year. Also Rudy Duterte and the other leaders of Metro Davao led by Majority Leader Boy Nograles for a similar drop, 57% last year to 49 now. Things are coming together for Mindanao, a prelude to their readiness for eventual federalism.
The Cyber Corridor will boost telecommunications, technology and education. The corridor runs the length of all the super regions, from Baguio to Cebu to Davao. The cities of Davao, Tagum and Samal Island Garden all operate electronic government accounting systems. There are many wings now to the corridor because enterprising local executives like L-Ray Villafuerte and Jerry Trenas have aggressively attracted call centers to their jurisdictions (Congratulations, Jerry) In this corridor, the English and information and communication technology skills of the youth give them a competitive edge in call centers and other business process outsourcing.
In 2001, in this hall, we hailed ICT as a key growth sector. So we built up telecommunications infrastructure and opened the market for Internet phone calls. Today international calls cost 6 cents a minute, down from 40 cents. From 2,000 BPO workers in 2001, we now have 200,000.
I had coffee with some call center agents last Labor Day. Lyn, a new college graduate, told me, "Now I don't have to leave the country in order for me to help my family. Salamat po." I was so touched, Lyn by your comments. With these structural reforms, we not only found jobs, but kept families intact. Thank God, I thought, or someone might also try to impeach me for violating Article 15 of the Constitution on the solidarity of the family as the foundation of the nation.
As Louie Villafuerte argues, to step into the future, a country that wants to be a player in the global economy needs bold and well-funded research and development initiatives of its own. To this end, we will continuously increase the budget for science and technology, and education. For in today's global economy, knowledge is the greatest creator of wealth.
In summary, I named only a few priorities to illustrate that on many fronts, your government is working, and working well. Our economy is now growing over the longest period in the last quarter-century: 22 consecutive quarters of growth. According to Thornton and Punongbayan, 70% of medium-sized business owners are optimistic, the fifth most optimistic among 30 countries, just behind India, Ireland, South Africa and China.
Bickering in politics may delay, but not derail the initiatives that need to be taken on our pro-poor, pro-growth, and pro-peace agenda. Regardless of the fate of the national budget, we must automate our election process. Local governments must get their rightful share of revenues. I ask Congress to pass a supplemental budget to effect this.
We are a great people. We have honest students and honest cops. We have scaled the heights of Mount Everest, dominated the Southeast Asian games, we have won international beauty titles, and of course punched our way to triumph in the boxing world. Our people compete and win every day in every imaginable job throughout the world. Individually, we've taken the world on and won; together, we must take on the challenge of creating a new, peaceful, humane and competitive nation and prevail.
For those who want to pick up old fights, we're game but what a waste of time. Why not join hands instead? Join hands in the biggest challenge of all, where we all win or we all lose: the battle for the survival and progress of our one and only country.
After three years, eleven months, and six days, I shall relinquish the Presidency, with much if not all that I have outlined completed. I do not want it said then that, in the end, I defeated my enemies. I would rather have it said that all of us, you and I, friends and foes today, achieved together a country progressive, prosperous and united.
Thank you. Mabuhay!

I shall conduct myself in public or while performing
my duties as journalist in such manner as t maintain
The dignity of my profession. When in doubt,
decency should be my watchword.

So I stand before you today to deliver a sate of the nation that
is focused on what the people want; the people want to know the plan to put us on the path to prosperity.
I am not here to talk about Politics; I am here to talk about what the people want; details on the state of the nation and what their government is doing to make progress every single day.
Gaya ng nakikita sa graph na ito, dahil sa ating reporma sa ekonomiya, we now have the funds to address social inequity and economic disparity….

I shall scrupulously report and interpret the news,
taking care not to suppress essential facts nor to
distort the truth by omission or improper emphasis.
I recognize the duty to air the other side and the
duty to correct substantive errors promptly.

May Telebisyon, Diyaryo , Radyo at maging ang universal access of information through internet connections.

'Bandila’
ABS-CBN raises the flag of journalism excellence
By Ayn Veronica L. de Jesus (from Manila Times)

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. hopes to change the face of Philippine television by moving its late night news program Insider to an earlier time slot. What’s more, the new program will be titled Bandila, which is the Filipino word for flag.
Maria Ressa (standing), head of ABS-CBN’s news and current affairs, says “tabloid news is not sensationalism.” Looking on are the Bandila’s management team: (seated, from left) Luchi Cruz Valdez, Charo Santos-Concio, Gabby Lopez and Chari Villa.
The move “is an act of leadership,” said Maria Ressa, head of the network’s news and current affairs division, explaining the choice for the title at a press conference on Tuesday. Her message: Nationalism, not merely ratings, will drive the news.
When Ressa took over the helm of the news division in June 2005, she noticed—not just in ABS-CBN—that programming in recent the years had become entertainment-driven. Particularly by consecutive soap operas—comprised of local and foreign telenovelas, fantaseryes and reality shows—which are shown from 7:30 p.m. onwards. The effect on the delivery of news is that it is pushed very late into the evening.
“We’re taking a risk here by moving the news to 10:30 p.m.,” she pointed out, so that viewers don’t have to stay awake wait until midnight to get their information.
The move not only aims to bring the news earlier to viewers, but also to polish the network’s image specifically, and that of media on the whole.
“Media has been getting a lot of negative publicity lately,” said Luchi Cruz Valdez, who has been tasked to head Bandila’s program production, adding that many viewers had begun to turn away from watching the news because most items focus on political bickerings, economic slump and national degradation. “We were feeding on that depression. We felt the time was right to do something,” she elaborated.
Ressa and Valdez are part of the management team that will oversee the daily production of Bandila.
Skip entertainment?
To be conducted in Filipino, Bandila will compete head on with entertainment programs in other channels.
“We have a double mandate,” Ressa said. “We will give viewers the information to help them make decisions in their lives. But we should also give this in a form that will make them forego entertainment [in the other channels in the same timeslot.]”
To attain this, “Bandila will go beyond just reporting news. There will be analysis that the ordinary person can process, to give them a better perspective of what’s happening in the country.”
She negated the possibility of delivering the news in a sensationalized manner, for which ABS-CBN has been criticized in the past.
“Tabloid news has become the norm globally. But tabloid news does not mean sensationalism. Tabloid news is appealing to the emotions of the viewers and going deeper into the issue.”
Ressa explained that while TV Patrol World, which airs at 6:30 p.m., will give audiences the who, what, where and when of the news, “Bandila will give them the how and why.
“We will start with the micro, the human interest, the person affected by the issue. Then we will give the macro, how an issue will affect the cost of doing business, its impact on the economy and the country.”
She explained, “in a country where most homes just have one television set, viewers tend to switch channels if they don’t like a certain show. That means they’re looking for content. The A and B crowd has more sources of content because they have cable television. But the C, D and E markets really don’t have a choice. So we want to give them another source of news aside from the early editions.
Explosive content, glitzy production
Chari Villa, who is also part of the management team and tasked with managing content, expressed confidence in being able to find and provide the stuff that viewers want, with the support of ABS-CBN’s infrastructure.
“I’m banking on ABS-CBN’s infrastructure to help me gather the content,” she said, emphasizing that the network’s 18 sites, including bureaus in the United States, Middle East, Europe, and soon Australia, will greatly support the team’s aim of providing more comprehensive and high-quality reportage.
The program will focus on national issues, but will also feature some police stories if they are significant, Villa added.
Valdez for her part, says the newscast’s pacing will be much different from the early edition in that there will be more glitz, more debate, more reactions. “It’s not going to be a replay of TV Patrol. The pacing will be faster,” she said, describing the format as maingay and makulay (noisy and colorful).
“There will be a lot of talking heads. It will be visually exciting.”
Veteran journalists
Korina Sanchez, Ces Drilon and Henry Omaga Diaz will anchor Bandila, each of them bringing 20 or more years of broadcast journalism experience into the newscast. The move also brings Sanchez back to newscasting after two years out of TV Patrol.
Ressa said the management team decided to replace Dong Puno from the late newscast Insider because of his “intellectual” image. “We want to deliver information through people who have a broader appeal and can talk to the masses.

...................................................................................................................................................................

Each part of the Philippine flag has a specific meaning as follows:The blue field stands for common unity and the noble aspirations of the Filipino people. The white triangle with equal sides of the flag is symbolic of equality among men.The white field stands for purity. The sun represents the gigantic strides that have been made by the Sons of the land on the road to progress and civilisation. The eight rays of the sun in the triangle represent the first eight united provinces that revolted for independence - Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Manila, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga and Tarlac. The three stars in the triangle stand for the three major geographical divisions of the country - Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The red field symbolises the willingness of the Filipino people to shed blood in defence of their country

Philippine law is particularly strict as to how the Philippine flag should and should not be displayed. There are also other points that need to be noted. When flown from a flagpole, the white triangle is closest to the flagpole, or when the flag is displayed horizontally, the white triangle should be on the left. If the flag is displayed vertically, or hanging downwards, then the white triangle should be at the top. In addition, the Philippine flag has a unique peacetime and wartime state. In peacetime, the blue stripe is at the top when the flag is horizontal or on the left when the flag is vertical. In wartime, the red stripe is at the top when the flag is horizontal or on the left when the flag is vertical.

-XXX- POWER OF MEDIA

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs have this –XXX-program in channel 2. It’s a special program hosted by Ms. Karen Davila, Julius Babao, and Henry Omaga- Diaz.

If you watched the program, you can see the concern of the team for Public Service. Here, they do thorough research and observation on whatever exposé’s they release. Here, Police and Media goes together to solve the problem.

In their episode last Saturday, July 08, they feature the issue of Manila North Cemetery (rotten skeletons scattered at the place and some open “ nitso” or tomb of the dead), the other is swindler cable man pretend as employee from sky cable a “sister company of ABS-CBN” (they ask payment to those houses who want an access to Cable but did’nt know that they are going to wrong cable man doing illegal connections), the last expose is the couple involved in staffa (nagsasanla sila ng bahay at lupa na hindi sa kanaila). All of these tree issues are presented well and got an immediate action, all are resolve through the help of media cameras and police assets as well as the program XXX.

As I watched the show, I find media as very powerful means in solving crimes. Actually, I realized why can’t media be the Police of our political system? Maybe in different aspect they can be police? How? More questions still are left on me.

At what sense Media is Powerful:

In XXX episode, I find media as powerful in correcting the flaws of our political system, the government and the officials who govern it. Example is, when Karen Davila got footage in the Manila North Cemetery, she immediately went to Manila City hall for immediate reaction and action of official regarding the problem. Here, you can view the manifestation of power to media as well as the media institution credible and reliable in telling the truth. That is why when Karen showed it, the officials immediately apologize and removed the officials who neglected their duty.

Another, Media is very powerful to gain the cooperation of Police. No more words to say, just an evident footage gathered by surveillance Camera’s, the XXX staff got the support of Police. Unlike when ordinary people report the problem, police will just ignore it. Here, example is the hoax cable man. When XXX team showed the caught in the act illegal operation of the two cable man, together with police, the media solve the problem. It only showed how media again is very powerful for immediate resolution.

Why don’t we let media solve all these commotion around our society?
Is this the role of Media?

Nowadays, Media seems to go beyond its true role. Today, media as an institution can manipulate and control people to whatever information it convey. They are able to get connections to responsible government offices in solving problems

In some instances, media became unethical to get information. They are so powerful to the point that criminal and those under siege by the law ask help to them. It seems that media is God to praise and salute giving everyone the chance to voice out their summons.

If in the past we contradict church involvement in government issues. We stand to be “anti-clerical”, now I think media replaced them to the point that most government officials came from media and media has a great involvement in our political system. Well, we can’t deny that media is powerful and it can be a means for propaganda movements.

Media is powerful, true. But media must be responsible in whatever freedom they had. If they can be more than a watchdog and they know that they can help to our institution. They can do so. But media must not abuse its power because we all know that if power is abused it will all goes back to them.

To the members of media, media practitioners, just remember, “No story worth dying for”, even the media institution you belong can’t help you when you’re in trouble.

Be JUST….objective, balance, fair and accurate for the TRUTH.

Media is a source and manifestation of power, it can corrupt you anytime even you don’t want to be corrupt.

TWISTER “No story worth Dying For”

Twister is a film directed by Jan De Bont.
It is a film bringing “the Dark Side of Nature”
Jan De Bont is also the producer of “JURRASIC PARK” and the Director of “SPEED”.

The Film Twister is a story full of “adventure swirling with cliffhanging excitement and awe-some special effects, Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton play scientists pursuing the most destructive weather front to sweep through mid-America’s Tornado Alley in 50 years. By launching electronic sensors in to the funnel, the storm chasers hope to obtain enough data to create an improved warning system. But to do so, they must intercept the twisters’ deadly path. The chase is on!” This is how the movie goes.

The film is very excellent by incorporating mass media principles. The production showed how haggard it is to predict the unpredictable events like tornado attacks. Here, life is at steak, like stories or news events, which is very hard to predict, when will it happen and where the stories will be. And this must a good journalist or broadcasters should know to get reports, the “ nose for news”.

One scene of the movie showed how technology works. It speed up every task in detecting tornadoes. It gives power to the one who hold it. But not all the time it helps, mostly if the person manipulating it, has no enough knowledge and almost dependent to it without even checking other resources of information.
This happened to John (another actor) and his group, who belittle Joe (Helen Hunt) and her group of scientists. There is a tight competition between the two. And in some point, John, used to be a colleague boast that they have the latest gadget, showing their superiority, and almost forgetting traditional ways in getting information. He also do unethical ways by copying information that their transmitter received from Joe’s group, where the direction of tornado is. Even making same device like “Dorothy” (a balls of camera which must be fly out at the funnel of tornado) to know the component of tornado and to catch full view of it.
Despite this, Joe (Helen Hunt) and her group of scientist who also cover the event. With all the gadgets, camera, OB-Van, transmitters with also computers specially programmed, that for them are okay, still rely on traditional ways in getting information. With maps, data gathered before, instinct of where is the direction of winds by not only relying to computers result. They are able to get the information. They don’t get any hesitation to stop them in their adventure.
To the journalist and broadcasters, to all media practitioners this must also be a model. Always cross-checked, verify, and don’t rely to only one source of information as well as dependent to technology. Don’t forget the traditional ways instead used them as essential to add more strategy in bringing out the story.
The situation pointed out above only showed same situation face by reporters. Wherein they are chasing same sources of information, competing to colleagues in getting the G’s of the story and in some instances reporters betrays their colleagues forgetting ethics just to get the information. They “kureyente their colleagues giving wrong information.
The story revolves in chasing tornados. Showing “houses rips a part piece by piece. A bellowing cow spins through the air. Tractors fall like rain. A 15,000-pound gasoline tanker becomes an air borne bomb. A mile- wide 300-miles per hour force of total devastation is coming at you”. The main actors of the movie didn’t give up, determined and full alert in chasing the tornado and take coverage.
Do you think journalist or broadcasters can do this? Like Noli De Castro of Magandang Gabi Bayan before, whom stand up at a mud rushing and flowing caused by volcanic eruption in Pampangga is great?

Well, no story worth dying for! Public service is public service, to be a reporter is a job to be done but if your life is at steak you can do ways to avoid your “death”. How?

WHEN DOING PUBLIC JOURNALISM, DON’T FROGET….

ü To rethink your role in the community as journalist, citizen and stake holder
ü That journalism should be guided by basic human values
ü The basics (accuracy, brevity, balance clarity and fairness).
ü To use investigative reporting skills to peel the layers of public life in the community.
ü To examine and report what’s wrong …and also what’s working
ü To bring in more voices in the news coverage and story
ü To synthesize and not simply record events and information
ü That journalist should always set the news agenda
ü To provide context to give readers and audience a sense of place and history
ü That public journalism is an attitude and set of values
ü That it is something that journalists must want to do and that it is commitment over the long term
ü That the public is the intended outcome rather than the assumed audience

PRINCIPLES OF PUBLIC JOURNALISM

ü Careful, timely, and sensitive listening to community needs
ü Systematic consultation of the community by means of polls and focus groups
ü Listening more closely to his or her audience and facilitating dialoged or “conversation” so that everyone talks. Participatory communication across differences, particularly in a multi-cultural society, to create “reciprocity”.
ü Dialogue with panels of resources specialists chosen for the differing expertise and perspectives
ü Media-sponsored public forum on key issues.
ü Continuity of in-depth reporting on issues chosen independently by journalists for their immediate relevance to citizen’s concerns.
ü The journalist must be a “fair-minded participant in a community that works” the journalist must become a properly attached advocate of serious talk to enable the community to recognize itself and make choices.

Source: Breaking the Norms
Published by the Center for Community Journalism and Development.

These pointers only means self-discipline is the key, together with living the knowledge you have right, in doing your job.
Don’t take the risk if you know there are choices and a safest way to bring the truth in your story. To be a good journalist means to live forever and not to die in just one story.

The essence of journalism is this no story worth your life!

A GOOD FACE OF REPORTAGE The Jessica Sojo Reports

Every Saturday, at about eight thirty in the evening or earlier, GMA network has this Jessica Sojo Reports program. Jessica Sojo, a woman, part of the news and current affairs program of the station, anchors the segment.

The kind of news she broadcast is quite investigative in approach and feature articles. For example is her episode about putik last July 1, Saturday. In the way she handle it, Jessica Sojo give different angles of the story. What are those?

Jessica give point on how different kind of mud became a work of art and a material for art. Here she presents the people in a place who used to celebrate the gift of nature using mud as paint in a competition. She interviewed different visual artist and make up artist how this special mud in the place was used in art.

In this case Jessica got the G’s of the story right. She has the reliable sources and good actualization of the story presented in the video showed at the Television.

Not only in art, she also features the usefulness of mud in the point of view of the entrepreneurs. Where in, she exampled how “red egg” are done by discussing and showing in the video how the process goes using a mud. Even interviewing a man who molds clay as a form of business in some part of Pampangga. She got a thorough research how the business goes regarding the used of clay.

The usefulness of mud is also discussed in a matter of how it was used as beauty agent and in its contribution to health. Covering a SPA using mud to beautify their costumers. This good reporter point out how mud helps in aging. By also simply discussing the component of mud “scientifically” which is good in skin, Jessica also got another side of the story regarding how mud is good for the health.

Using the Episode of JEWEL in the Palace in GMA, which showed KOREAN food in their show. Again she got another approach regarding how mud serve as an ingredients in food or material for food preparations like the CHIKEN MUD cuisine of one Korean restaurant. In the footage together with a voiceover, they showed the preparation of chicken, which is covered with a mud to moderate the temperature while it is soak in the firewood.

In the Religious aspect or belief of Filipino people, Jessica also showed how essential mud is. Featuring a place in Nueva Ecija. People here; cover their self of mud as a sign of humility accepting their sins, and believing that human came from mud. Here another side of story again was showed, where mud is part of Religious belief.

In these different news angle of the story using one topic, which is mud or putik, is great. Because they are able to explore it in different manner and approaches, which must a good journalists or media practitioner, do.

Showing the different approach and faces of the story only means a well-researched report. It only showed Jessica Sojo and those people who are part of the production who make it that they are not indolent in getting information. Wherein, they travel, cover and gather information patiently to bring a very good reportage.

The show is not only an example of a worthy news and current affairs program. It’s not only about profit and increase of viewers. If ever that it is the top rating show, I would say, they deserved it. For they did well, in they’re every weekly episode.

This kind of Jessica Sojo Report program must be an example to all media men. That living with journalistic enterprise, which is to be a “determined, patient, and diligent” reporter, could end to good, credible, reliable and informative news.

Mass Media news programs are all about business and entertainment nowadays neglecting their part as an information giver. They turned out to be audience conscious to get or to be the top rating. But these two negative factors turned out to be good in Jessica’s program. For despite that it’s business news to GMA network, still it plays its role to entertain and inform the public.

The show is not merely for the viewers to watch and appreciate. It is also a good example of an excellent model for journalism and broadcast practice. This was must a media men and media outfit does that has their own agenda to mold their job.

To those incoming media practitioners, to all journ-schools, to those mass communication teachers and students, to the media networks and media programs, to those who are in the media industry.

These show must serve as an example in improving the debasing media programs and media practitioners we have here in the Philippines. #

By.
Marie Joy D. This thing is obviously diminishing the reliability and credibility of news, even news anchors.

The traditional news programs genre now turned more unto entertainment. There exist the power of drama as an element to catch viewer’s attentions. This is the usual approach of mass media news programs in the Philippines. The point is “it sells”, so why not? If it’s the way to be a top rating news program, then apply the drama strategy thing.

Different media outfits have over used its power. It almost goes beyond the boundaries of journalistic and broadcasting principles. News formats became very sensationalized, tabloid approach, somewhat even ethics is being neglected. Here “the bloodier the news, the better and the more it sells”, regardless of who is in the headline or articles released.

The airwaves are becoming polluted. Rules and Regulations in a Free Press country like Philippines is not that adequately implemented. Now, the watchdog should observe its problems. They must be given sanctions and additional rules to fixed their media organizations.

Cleaning the airwaves is hard. For we know that in Article 3 Section 4, it says:

No Law shall be passed abridging
the freedom of speech, expression
and right of people.

But obviously the system is worst. The Freedom to Express has not given weight with a great responsibility by those journalists, broadcasters even the media outfits. They just aired what they find good or sells to people. Media set their own agendas for business. Journalist and Broadcasters just write and speak or reports, neglecting the principles they learned. This is now the trend, which developed from the past mistakes caused by being so “free”.

Thinking about this situation. Do you find it right not to pass a law to regulate the thriving problem in media? Finding this downside of the Philippine Press does makes you want to be part of the system? Do you want to be in GMA-7 or ABS-CBN? What can you do? Are you going to be one? Does it makes you say, “ If you can’t beat them, then join them”? Think of it.
